Taking the Sun on the Road

“Go ahead and stare at the sun”! Say that to someone and they’ll stare at you with amazement. But as a solar observer and imager, that’s exactly what I’m trying to get everyone to do. By either submitting a shot to a magazine, a chat forum or presenting a talk, one steps into the thrilling world of becoming a solar ambassador. And what a thrill it is! People love to learn about the sun. “Towering prominences and colossal filaments” capture the imagination of astronomers and the public alike. |
Recently, at the East Coast Conference on Astronomical Imaging (ECCAI) in Philadelphia, I presented a talk titled “Our Amazing Sun”. There, the idea was to inspire the group of mostly nighttime imagers to think about the sunny side of imaging. Based on the feedback I received, I think it worked. I’m proud to say a few of the participants wanted to know more and how to get started.
That’s what it’s all about!
Next up are presentations at the Almost Heaven Star Party at Spruce Knob Mountain in West Virginia on Aug. 26 and The University of Maryland Observatory on Aug 28. Of course don’t forget Coronado’s Hands on the Sun conference in Irvine, California on October 6-8. It’ll be a fun and educational event for sure! |
If your group would like to have a glimpse into the fascinating activity of the sun, just send me a quick message. Before long we’ll have them “staring at the sun” too.
Enjoy the sun,
