Sometimes after running for a short time my with my DSI running on my Windows Vista laptop I get the following error message: "5 images failed to xfer, disconnect all other USB 1.1 devices or switch to USB 2.0"
My laptop has three USB 2.0 ports and no other devices are plugged in. Therefore I have no idea what it is telling me. Anybody have this problem?
Many thanks,
Howard

99 Percent of the time this happens is from a bad USB connection.Make sure your cables are good and are making a good connection.

Thanks Mark, but I do not agree. There does not seem to be any rime or reason for what is happening. It will work for a short time...then that error message comes up. Or, it will work for quite a while and then the message comes up. I di not have the problem doing lunar imaging earlier in the evening. But later, doing deep sky the problem appears. I am using, only, the USB cable that came with the camera. There is no movement of the cable do that is why I do not agree that it is a connection issue.
Thanks,
Howard

Just a thought Howard, are you able to try a different PC? I have had some issues where the USB port on a laptop is marginal for powering the DSI and as the current increases during image transfer it can cause data loss or other anomalies.
If you can you might want to try a powered USB hub to eliminate that possibility.

I had heard about that possibility from Meade. I am not sure it is a Vista issue computer hardware issue. I will try the powered USB hub solution and post the results here.
My desktop, running Windows XP does not recognize the DSI so I will need to fix that issue to test your theory.
Thanks for the input, Brent.

Well I tried a powered USB hub and I still get the same message. Just like before, it comes up occasionally. I used the DSI with my Windows XP desktop and I do not get the message there. So, it is either a laptop hardware issue or a Windows Vista issue.

Howard, I was reading some of the posts on the Autostarsuite forum and it seems that for some people envisage works ok with Vista and others it doesn't. Check this post: http://autostarsuite.net/forums/thread/13153.aspxYou might find something useful there. Can you try another image capture program like Nebulosity from Stark-Labs? It works well with Vista and the DSI cameras. Brent

BRENT,
THANKS FOR THE TIP. IT WAS INTERESTING READING AND I WILL HAVE TO DELVE FURTHER INTO IT. INTERESTING, THOUGH, MY ERROR MSG WAS NOT MENTIONED.
I HAVE A TRIAL VERSION OF NEBULOSITY AND I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS RUNNING THE DSI WITH IT ON MY DESK. I HAVE NOT YET TRIED TO IMAGE WITH IT. THAT BRINGS UP ANOTHER QUESTION....WHAT IMAGING SOFTWARE IS AVAILABLE TO IMAGE WITH THE DSI SERIES BESIDES ENVISAGE AND NEBULOSITY?
THANKS AGAIN,
HOWARD

Howard,
The only other image capture software that supports the DSI series that I know is K3CCD Tools and MaximDL. There may be others but I don't know of them.

I'm getting the "Image xfer failed" message... with a new DSI III, right out of the box. I get no completed xfers. Meade's hardware/software QA falls a little short sometimes. Dell Inspiron 8600 on XP Pro USB drivers indicate USB 2.0 and I'm pretty sure it's operating as USB 2 (canon camera download and thumb drives work fine and fast) I reinstalled the software using the CD that came with it. Can't convince myself that it's different than the software update I got off their website ~6 months ago. My comp system has supported LPI, DSI (pro and color - one of these might have been a DSI II) as well as web cams and a host of other USB devices. I don't think it's a problem with the USB ports. I plan to try a powered USB hub, but am disturbed to learn that this hasn't solved the problem for at least one other user. Is there anything else I should be trying or looking for? The USB cable provided looks like a "USB Printer Cable". Should I try another cable?

Howard,
Couple of questions: You mentioned you had a Nebulosity trial version. Does Neb see the camera and display an image? If so that will check out the driver and cable.
Did the Meade USB driver for the DSI-3 load correctly? Can you preview an image with Envisage?
USB cables are important. Try another if you can.

UPDATE on my "image xfer error" problem -
After beating on this a little more (re-installing, testing other ports and devices) I purchase a powered USB hub as this has been mentioned several places as the fix. Well... turns out that didn't solve my problem and no change in symptoms. I still got the "image xfer error", and the computer (a Dell) recognized that the camera was there, same as before. Arghhh.
What finally did it was to uninstall the software and to completely purge all directories and registry entries pertaining to Meade and then reinstall "fresh". (I had an assortment of Meade installs from my 'scope, and old LPI, and a fellow club member's older DSI...)
Now all is well and the DSI III operates off the USB port without the powered hub. I guess Meade's software installation scripts don't deal well with the presence of prior versions.
Hopefully I'll be getting some images after the sky gods are done punishing me... Now that the DSI's working, its cloudy. Double Arghhh.
