Dear Sir/Madam,

Before I consider registering, please answer the following:

1.   Are the star signs based on the real path of the Sun through the “Zodiac” today?

2.   Did you know that there are now 13 signs of the Zodiac, as the Sun spends much of December in Ophiuchus? Does your horoscope take account of this?

3.   Did you know that the Moon and major planets can also pass through Cetus and Orion? Has any allowance been made for that?

4.   Do you horoscopes take into account the positions of Uranus and Neptune?

5.   Do astronomical objects in the Kuiper Belt, such as Pluto and Eris have any effect on our fate?

6.   What about planets orbiting stars outside the solar system, as about 330 are known to us today.

Many thanks,

Phil.

Phil,

Great questions... I'm sure you didn't get much of a reply.

I too find my ears snapping shut when I have discussions with people about astrology.  However, there are at least a few reasons for us in the amateur Astro community to keep our pride in check.

(1)  Like it or not, we owe ancient astrologers an incredible debt.  They were responsible for many of the early charts, maps and observations that paved the way for folks like Kepler and Tycho, often lovingly and very artistically done.  Indeed, they were the first "observational" astronomers, even though they themselves would have used the term "natural philosophers."  The care and detail of their renditions show an astounding attention to detail and a passion that I find commonly amongst the current amateur astro community, so there is much in Spirit (if not in fact-based theory)  that we really do share with those long departed ancients.

(2)  Much of the interest that gets the general public out to star parties today is as firmly grounded in a curiosity about astrology as much as it is Hubble observations.  I don't know if the rest of the Astro community has experienced this, but when doing demonstrations with my local astro club I am often fielding as many questions about the Zodiac and astrology as much as astronomy and Hubble HST topics.   For whatever reason, this gets people out under the stars and I do my best not to knock it, at least in public.

(3) I am told that within the Astrological community there are raging debates and arguments between the "sidereal" and the traditional camps.  Some embrace all the new information that modern astronomy brings to their table, others insist on keeping things they way they were for the last 5,000 years.  The point is that at least in SOME astrological circles they are keeping an open mind, so out of courtesy I try to reciprocate that spirit and feeling, even if I disagree with their conclusions.

True, I'm never going to try to predict Uncle Fred's romantic prospects by what I see on my Austostar Envisage sky charts.   But I never loose sight of the debt that we amateur astronomers owe those ancients who went beyond just looking at the sky and started charting their observations.  We stant on their shoulders, and shouldn't forget that.  Or so methinks!

All comments and disagreements welcome!!

Some answers from a master astrologer:

1.   Are the star signs based on the real path of the Sun through the “Zodiac” today?

Of course! Our super Zodiac computer processes the current ephemeris data every five minutes. We also provide e-mail alerts should your horoscope deviate from the daily prediction. Ask about our new Zodiac insurance.

2.   Did you know that there are now 13 signs of the Zodiac, as the Sun spends much of December in Ophiuchus? Does your horoscope take account of this?

Yes there are 13 signs not 12. Our zodiac computer knows all, sees all and tells quite a bit. It can also send a virus to your PC.

3.   Did you know that the Moon and major planets can also pass through Cetus and Orion? Has any allowance been made for that?

Sure! What do you think we are? Witch doctors. Actually it can produce a 6-sigma RMS error in our calculations which we consider to be insignificant unless you are a nit-picking perfectionist.

4.   Do you horoscopes take into account the positions of Uranus and Neptune?

Yes. Neptune is the planet of insight, idealization and inspiration while Uranus represents the higher intellect. Most people could really benefit from Uranus.

5.   Do astronomical objects in the Kuiper Belt, such as Pluto and Eris have any effect on our fate?

Only if one of those objects lands on you.

6.   What about planets orbiting stars outside the solar system, as about 330 are known to us today.

We can predict horoscopes for those too but it can take a long time for the e-mail to get there.
