Just obtained a Meade DSI and loaded Autostar Suite with the PC running XP does not recognise the hardware and is unable to locate the driver. Can anyone help this newbie?

You might try this link:

http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/AutostarManuals/ASSuiteInstallQuikGuide.pdf

Uninstall Autostar Suite and follow the above. Be sure you have the latest version [7.05].

Hi Brent, followed your advice and instructions to the letter and uninstalled Autostar suite and then re-installed web edition version 5.5 and also Envisage off same Meade website. My PC still cannot locate driver and "Found Camera" does not appear on my PC screen when camera connected to USB hub. I am certain that when installation got to LPI install screen, I chose "modify" and installed drivers.

What else can I do to resolve this problem?

Regards,

Hi Mike,

You really should install the Autostar Suite off the Meade website ver 7.05 however the older one should still work.

Do you have a laptop or desktop PC? Does your PC do the usual beep when you plug in a USB device?
You mentioned you are using a USB hub, can you try it direct into the PC?

Hi Brent,

Thanks for coming back to me, I have installed off supplied CD and version 5.5 on web both with same results. Yes, the PC beeps when DSI plugged into both the hub and direct into PC USB port. I have also installed Autostar suite onto Dell XPS laptop running Vista with same results. In all instances, both computers cannot locate driver even though when installing software the DSI dialog window says "DSI driver installed" I have also installed Envisage version 7 off meade website.

I appreciate your help and advice but would not wish you to spend too much of your time on this problem.

Best Regards, Mike

No worries Mike, always happy to help a fellow telescoper.

Has the DSI ever worked on any PC? If Windows can't read the external hardware header it won't know which drivers to use. Try a different cable.

Are the USB ports enabled [obvious question but I have seen it happen], that is, will some other device work with the USB port?

Hi Brent,

Bought DSI from ebay as used item and understand was working ok by seller but have to take his word for that.

However, don't quite understand about using another cable, do you mean USB cable from PC to camera?

USB hub is enabled.  By the way, you know I'm from U.K. and there is an obvious time difference? I think I'm about 8 hours behind you, at least.

Mike,

Yes, I was referring to trying a different USB cable from the DSI to the PC. I have seen these go bad on occasion due to excessive flexing.

What you are describing is rather unusual. I don't know about Vista as some drivers do not work with it but on XP the drivers are automatically loaded and initialize the first time the DSI is connected.

To keep it simple I would be sure I have the 7.05 version loaded on an XP machine and connect directly to the USB port on the PC. If that does not work after replacing the cable I would suspect the camera.

I am assuming that the hub/XP is using USB2 and not 1.1.

If all else fails you might contact a local dealer or find a club and try swapping the DSI or plugging it into a PC that works with one as a camera test.

I am in N. California and it is -8 hours from GMT.

Hi Brent,

Tried a different cable in USB2 hub (mains power supply), with no improvement. The Autostar suite on meade site is only version 5.5. No idea how to get 7.05. Envisage is version 7 though.

I will contact ebay seller and express my doubts about camera and see what happens. I have not joined an observatory club yet as membership is closed until next April but will take your advice and attempt to contact a member for his assisstance.

I appreciate your time and effort trying to sort out this problem for me and will keep you updated on my progress.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the confusion, I was thinking of Envisage which is ver 7.05 on the Meade website. Envisage will also load drivers for the DSI and is the primary camera controller unless you use other software like Nebulosity for image capture.

Sorry I could not be more help. Let me know how things work out.
