Those of you who know me may be aware that my wife comes from Santiago. Fortunately, my in-laws are OK and didn't suffer any structural damage to their house. However, we know 2 people who died and a few more who have lost homes. I know there's a personal bias here but remember that a lot of astronomical research is done there, too. I know the UK, USA, Africa et al all have their problems but we gave to the Asian tsumani.
