I recently bought a used LXD75 for my 2080 SCT.  The mount works fine and is a definate upgrade over the LX5 drive that it replaced.

The only real problem I'm having is with the polar alignment scope.  Basically it is junk.

First off, there is way too much slop between the reticule holder threads and the optical tube threads.  This slop makes it impossible to get the main objective collimated to the reticule/eyepiece.  This is evidenced by the fact that when the scope is rotated in RA, the entire FOV "wobbles", and no amount of adjustment via the three set screws can correct it.

Second, there is slop between the reticule and the reticule holder.  The reticule is not "fixed" within the holder.

Third, because of the errors introduced by #1 and #2, the entire scope cannot be "bore sighted" to the RA axis.

What I really need to know is there a suitable replacement available, or am I stuck with this junk?

Thanks!

Cliff,

I had a similar issue when I had my LXD75 mount. Lots of slop. I took the thing apart and managed to tape and glue things together and it worked somewhat. I have never seen a replacement.

I just ended up adjusting the alignment screws for the mount until I could see Polaris in an eyepiece. Close enough for visual work.

I had the same issues. I'm perfectly happy with my -75 now that I have it dialed in mechanically (worm tension, spur gears locktighted, etc) but my unresolved gripe is the polar scope...there's too much play in it and it doesn't adjust well, even if you do the wrap tape around the polar scope to tighten up clearances trick. Screwing around with this while on your knees cranking your neck to peer through the polar scope makes it pretty aggravating.

Last week I did some work on an alternative. I just started a thread for this...
