Hi John - I manually focused using an Android Tablet and an app called DSLR Controller from Chainfire that displays the live view "feed" on the tablet. The app has a FWHM histogram that tells me when best focus has been reached.
If you have a laptop handy, you can also use an application like Backyard EOS to accomplish the same thing. Using FWHM to focus is much easier for me since by vision isn't that great.

Was this taken with an autofocus lens? If so, how did you set the focus? I've have a problem setting the focus with my Canon autofocus lenses. I've tinkered with using the autofocus on a bright star or distant object and then turning the autofocus off, but I have to be very careful not to bump it after it is set.
